Ian is a civil litigator, intellectual property lawyer, and patent agent. He works with inventors, artists, and entrepreneurs to advance the state of the art by securing, leveraging, and defending their intellectual property rights.

Before joining the legal profession, Ian worked in one of Canada’s leading research institutes. His published research and technical expertise in the areas of synthetic biology, physical biochemistry, and computational biochemistry provide Ian with the ability to understand subject-matter in the life sciences, physical sciences, and engineering disciplines. He now relies on his technical expertise to advise clients on a wide variety of patent, copyright, trademark, domain name, industrial design, and plant breeders’ rights matters. In particular, Ian has experience in managing and licensing intellectual property developed by universities and public/private research collaborations. Ian also has experience assisting clients with civil litigation matters before the Federal Court of Canada, Court of King’s Bench of Alberta, and Alberta Court of Justice.

Ian was born and raised in Lethbridge and completed his BSc in Biochemistry at the University of Lethbridge before pursuing his JD at the University of Alberta. Throughout law school, Ian worked as a legal intern for the University of Alberta technology transfer office. He then articled in one of the largest intellectual property practice groups in Western Canada before moving back home to Lethbridge. Ian enjoys spending time mountain biking, skiing, and playing board games with his friends and family.

Ian works from the Chancery Court office in downtown Lethbridge.
