Ian is a civil litigator and intellectual property lawyer. He works with inventors, artists, and entrepreneurs to advance the state of the art by securing, leveraging, and defending their intellectual property rights.

Before joining the legal profession, Ian worked over a five-year period in one of Canada's leading research institutes. His published research and technical expertise in the areas of synthetic biology, physical biochemistry, and computational biochemistry provide Ian with the ability to understand subject-matter in the life sciences, physical sciences, and engineering disciplines. He now relies on his technical expertise to advise clients on a wide variety of patent, copyright, trademark, domain name, industrial design, and plant breeders' rights matters. In particular, Ian has experience in managing and licensing intellectual property developed by universities and public/private research collaborations. Ian also has experience assisting clients with a number of employment and civil litigation matters before the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta and the Provincial Court of Alberta.

Ian is passionate about promoting scientific literacy among members of the public and the legal community. He works with a number of local organizations to enhance scientific communication through public advocacy, education, and new media like 3D animation and 3D printing. He is also an accomplished public speaker, having presented at a number of scientific conferences, legal education seminars, and moot court competitions throughout his career. Notably, Ian was recognized as a quarterfinalist in the 2018 Oxford International Intellectual Property Moot, ranking within the top ten percent of participants from around the World.

Ian was born and raised in Lethbridge and completed his BSc in Biochemistry at the University of Lethbridge before pursuing his JD at the University of Alberta. Throughout law school, Ian worked as the legal intern for a top-ranked university business accelerator and technology transfer office. He then articled in one of the largest intellectual property practice groups in Western Canada before moving back home to Lethbridge. Ian enjoys spending time mountain biking, skiing, and playing board games with his friends and family.
