For more than 47 years, Mr. North was a dedicated lawyer, colleague, and mentor at North & Company LLP. He served the legal profession with distinction at the local, provincial, and national levels, holding leadership roles as a Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta, Chairman of the Alberta Law Foundation, Chair of the Legal Education Society of Alberta, and President of the Lethbridge Bar Association. His exceptional contributions were recognized with the Distinguished Service Award from the Law Society of Alberta and the Canadian Bar Association, Alberta Branch.
A committed community leader, Phil gave generously of his time and expertise. He served as President of the Lethbridge Rotary Club, Chair of the Lions Eye Bank (Alberta) Society, President of the Lethbridge Community Foundation, and Director of the Community Foundations of Canada. A strong supporter of the University of Lethbridge, he served as Board of Governors chair from 1978 to 1984 and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws in 2004. The University also established the Philip North Management Award, presented to Dhillon School of Business students who demonstrate academic excellence and meaningful community or athletic involvement. In 2005, he received the Alberta Centennial Medal for outstanding service to the province.
Phil was also deeply woven into the fabric of Lethbridge’s hockey community. A lifelong player, organizer, and advocate, he helped establish the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Hockey Program and spent decades nurturing the sport he loved.
Mr. North’s legacy endures through his leadership, generosity, and the many organizations and individuals he strengthened throughout his life.
